The average reader of my magazine listens predominantly to folk music, although he doesn’t mind other acoustic styles and some rock. When he isn’t listening to music or looking for cool music videos on YouTube he’s out buying new clothes from vintage clothes shops and hunting retro vinyl’s in music stores. He goes out often, to parties and the like where he meets new people with similar interests and shares his views, possibly recommending this magazine to them.
I have learned from my survey that the average reader of my magazine would be aged 10-19 but some older readers would also be interested in purchasing it. Of the people who completed my survey the majority say that they would buy a magazine every month or two which would mean that I should try to publish an issue at least once a month. Digital downloads seem to be the preferred method of procuring music, followed closely by CD and then vinyl.
The top five genres of music listened to by the people who completed my survey are, in order; Rock, Folk, Dubstep, R&B and Pop. I have decided from this to go with a folk themed magazine as I feel that the market is overpopulated with magazines which cater to fans of Rock and a folk one would fit into a niche market. My reader probably listens to some of the more mainstream folk artists like; Mumford and Sons, Frank Turner, Noah and the Whale, Lana Del Rey as well as less well known people such as; Laura Marling and even some older bands like Bob Dylan.
From what I gather, people tend to go to gigs and festivals fairly regularly so I think that there should be a section in my magazine devoted to detailing upcoming performances and places to buy tickets.
By a pretty close vote, people seemed to prefer a one genre magazine over one which covered a wide variety so folk will be my main focus. This will unify the whole thing and enable me to create a house style of sorts that will make the magazine memorable.
